Quick Start Guide

Get started with Inheritor in minutes

Welcome to Inheritor - a secure digital inheritance app that lets you pass assets to beneficiaries using blockchain technology. This guide will help you set up and use all essential features.

Table of Contents

1. Getting Started

First Launch

When you first open Inheritor, the app will automatically:

  • Initialize and generate your cryptographic (private) keys and store them securely
  • Create smart account address for the Arbitrum network
  • Set up blockchain connections to Ethereum and Arbitrum networks
  • Retrieve addresses of the smart contracts

This process takes 30-60 seconds and happens automatically.

Identity Setup

You'll be prompted to enter your name, so that beneficiaries understand from whom they receive an inheritance. This can be a moniker, but use your real name for clarity.

  1. Enter your full name when prompted
  2. This name will be visible to beneficiaries (unless you create anonymous inheritances)
  3. You can change this later in Settings

Adding Beneficiaries

Method 1: Network Sharing (Recommended)

  1. Both you and the person you want to add as beneficiary should have Inheritor open
  2. Keep phones within Bluetooth range
  3. On your device: Tap + in the toolbar, then Receive via Network
  4. On their device: Tap the share symbol in the toolbar, then Share via Network
  5. The beneficiary code will be automatically transferred
  6. Tap Add Beneficiary to complete
Note: Network sharing uses Bluetooth and requires both devices to be nearby. This is the most convenient method for in-person setup.

Method 2: Manual Entry

  1. Have the beneficiary share their beneficiary code with you (via email, message, etc.)
  2. Paste the beneficiary code in the text field
  3. Tap the Add Beneficiary button
Note: To understand the process, a demo beneficiary code is shown. You can copy/paste this code to create your first beneficiary for testing. Any inheritances sent to this demo beneficiary are 'lost'.

Sharing Your Beneficiary Code

To let others add you as their beneficiary:

  1. Tap the share symbol in the toolbar
2. Choose from three sharing options:
    • Share via Network: Direct transfer to nearby devices
    • Send Invite: Creates a comprehensive message with your beneficiary code for email/messaging
    • Copy Beneficiary Code: Copies just the code to clipboard for manual sharing

Configure Interval Settings

  1. Choose your check-in frequency:
This is how frequently you want to check in to confirm your wellbeing.
  2. Notifications:
Set how many days before the end of the check-in period you want to receive notifications.

Create Your First Inheritance

1. Select beneficiary

Selecting Assets

Choose a file which you want to inherit:

  • Documents: PDFs, Word docs, text files
  • Images: Photos, screenshots, artwork
  • Videos: Personal messages, memories
Note: Virtually anything can be inherited. Inheritor uses tokenization to convert your digital files into encrypted tokens stored permanently on decentralized storage. This means you can pass on not just files, but also information like account credentials, cryptocurrency seed phrases, personal letters, or instructions for your loved ones. Visit the Personalize your Digital Will section on our home page for creative examples of what you can include in your digital will.

Adding Personal Messages

  1. In the message field, write a personal note to your beneficiary
  2. This message is encrypted (does not show on the blockchain) and is visible only for beneficiary in the claim tab
  3. Consider including context about the inherited files

Setting Grace Period

The grace period determines when an inheritance becomes available to your beneficiary after you miss a check-in. Think of this as the timing strategy for each inheritance:

  • Short Grace Periods (days to weeks): For inheritances you want beneficiaries to access quickly after something happens to you - such as important passwords, immediate financial information, or urgent instructions
  • Medium Grace Periods (weeks to months): For general inheritances that should be available after a reasonable time to ensure you're truly incapacitated
  • Long Grace Periods (months to years): For inheritances intended for future delivery - e.g. inheritances designated to young children in order to wait till they reach a certain age

Anonymous Inheritance

  • Regular: Your name is visible to the beneficiary in the claim tab
  • Anonymous: Your identity is hidden (but can be revealed in the asset)

Network Selection

  • Arbitrum (Free): Fast, lower cost, included in free version
  • Ethereum (Premium): Slower, more secure, requires subscription
Note: See the Premium Version guide to learn more about the different networks.

Final Confirmation

  1. Review all settings
  2. Tap Create Inheritance, interaction with the smart contract starts

2. Understanding the App Interface

Toolbar

  • ($) Store with subscription options
  • Share symbol to share your beneficiary code with others
  • (+) only visible in Beneficiary tab. Add new beneficiary

Digital Will Tab

Inheritance Cards

All your inheritances together form your digital will. Each inheritance appears as a card showing:

  • Beneficiary Name: Who will receive the inheritance
  • Message Preview: Your message to beneficiary
  • Creation Date: When you created it
  • Status: Current state (see status guide below)
  • Network Logo: Indication if inheritance is deployed on Ethereum or Arbitrum

State Transitions

Inheritances follow these state changes:

  • Designated → Claimable: When timing conditions are met
  • Claimable → Claimed: When beneficiary successfully claims the inheritance
  • Designated → Revoked: When you manually cancel the inheritance

Inheritance Details

Tap any inheritance card to view detailed technical information, including:

  • On-chain verification: Smart contract status and transaction details
  • Storage information: Arweave transaction ID and data integrity
  • Timing details: Grace period, check-in deadlines, and claimability status
  • Network information: Which blockchain network (Ethereum/Arbitrum) hosts the inheritance
Privacy & Security: For your protection, encrypted asset data is never stored on your device. When you tap to view an inheritance, the app securely retrieves the encrypted data from Arweave's decentralized storage network and decrypts it on-the-fly using your private keys.

Beneficiaries Tab
